Ministry of Defence Head Office energy use

Welcome to the MOD’s 'live' energy data page. We are committed to meeting the Prime Minister’s pledge to make this the greenest government ever.

Real-time on-line energy display is part of the Government’s commitment to cut carbon emissions from central government by 10% within 12 months. The energy used at MOD Main Building will be constantly updated on-line in units of energy, cost and carbon.

You can view energy consumption, cost and carbon dioxide emissions over different periods of time. See External links on the right of this page.

We are also providing the raw energy consumption data, which is compiled once every 24 hours, in a format we hope you will find useful and will want to re-use.

MOD Main Building baseline and target.
The interim target figure is 1,412 tonnes of CO2 for the period 14 May 2010 – 13 May 2011. This figure is subject to confirmation and is likely to be adjusted, including to reflect the use of weather correction data.

How will MOD Main Building deliver energy use reductions by May 2011?
We have initiated a number energy reduction measures in order to achieve our target, with more planned in the coming months. Measures which have, or are about to be implemented include:

Project: Floor Plate lighting
Expected CO2 saving: 215t approx
Comment: Altering the setting to the light sensors so that fewer lights are switched on and reducing the time that the lights are activated down to 30 minutes.

Project: Unoccupied Area Lighting
Expected CO2 saving: 20t approx
Comment: Reduced light levels down to 25%

Project: Unoccupied Area Equipment
Expected CO2 saving: 142t approx
Comment: Removal of all electrical equipment from unoccupied areas

Project: Christmas closedown
Expected CO2 saving: 85t approx
Comment:Closedown all non-essential equipment during the season break

Project: Lifts
Expected CO2 saving: 95t approx
Comment: Closedown of 6 lifts between Friday evening and Monday morning and reduce number lifts during the week

Project: Chiller Plant
Expected CO2 saving: 550t approx
Comment: Reducing operating times of chiller plant

Project: Hydro boilers / Chill Water Taps
Expected CO2 saving: 12t approx
Comment:Replace 'hydro boilers' and chilled water taps with a single more energy efficient model

Project: Fan Coil Units
Expected CO2 saving: TBC - to be implemented
Comment:Reduce times (or switch off if possible) any localised cooling units

Project: Enhanced Power Supply Management
Expected CO2 saving: TBC, but potentially signicant
Comment: Reports to be submitted

Project: Staff Behaviour (switch off IT, take the stairs, turn off the lights etc)
Expected CO2 saving:
Comment:
A number of communication methods have been used to engage staff, invite suggestions and help make savings. Methods include building wide emails, information stands, use of MOD Intranet and 'Town Hall' style briefings.
