On the South Pembrokeshire coast, just west of Tenby.
Site Description
Penally Range has provided a variety of live firing ranges and facilities for military training for over 140 years. Because of this, the Range provides evidence of the 19th and 20th century military occupation of the site. A wide variety of conservation interests are to be found including breeding birds, feeding and roosting choughs, intertidal habitats, limestone rock exposures, coastal landforms and a peat bog.
The site is adjacent to one of the most popular beaches in the area and provides excellent panoramic views of the Pembrokeshire coastline from Giltar Point, looking out to Caldey Island.
Access Opportunities
Located between Penally Village and one of Pembrokeshire's most popular beaches, Tenby South Beach, the Range area is crossed by the main beach access path from the station car park.
The Pembrokeshire Coast Path, a National Trail, crosses the site. When the Range is closed to the public, walkers follow a route inland along the A4139.
At the southeast end of the site, Giltar Point is very popular with sightseers, fishermen and climbers, and the Coast Path provides fine views of Tenby and Caldey.
The Range is used for live small arms firing and the Danger Area extends out into the sea. The above access opportunities are limited during firing periods.
