About Defence
Whilst the MoD is committed to ensuring that opportunities for public access are not unduly restricted, sometimes temporary or permanent restrictions will be required at times, generally where live firing is being undertaken or where other operational training is underway. Access restrictions are generally defined through Military Byelaws. However, access may also be restricted under the provisions of the Countryside & Rights of Way Act 2000 in England and Wales and the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 in Scotland.
Restrictions under Military Byelaws
Lulworth Ranges Walks, Dorset
Where Military Byelaws are in operation, public access may be restricted or in some cases excluded for operational or safety reasons. Details of restrictions are available by telephoning the site contact number given on each page or as displayed locally.
The timing and extent of live firing will be given on firing notices displayed in local newspapers or notices. Locally red flags (daytime) or lamps (nightime) warn the public that live firing is in progress. Please read and abide by local site notices and directions.
The extent of live firing danger areas are illustrated on Ordnance Survey maps with a series of red arrows.
Restrictions under the Countryside & Rights of Way Act 2000 (CROW)
Access signs
Some MOD land has been mapped under the CROW Act and restrictions to public access on this land may be necessary. Restrictions will be kept to a minimum and details will be provided on the Countryside Access website for England or the Countryside Access Wales website.
Restrictions under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 (LR(S)A)
Under this legislation, operational and military training are deemed to be land management operations and therefore access may be restricted for reasons of public safety. Temporary and permanent signage, in accordance with the LR(S)A, has been installed to give clear advice on access restrictions to Training Areas and the risks associated with these sites. The signs will include a contact number for queries.
General Safety
Great care has been taken to ensure that you will be safe when you access the defence estate. However, Armed Forces training can be dangerous.
