Cycling on the Defence Estate

Cycling on Defence Estate is possible for all abilities.

Cycling on Defence Estate is possible for all abilities.

Cyclists can use a vast array of Bridleways when byelaws permit access and a wide number of other paths and tracks where access has been permitted including sections of the National Cycle Network. These are detailed locally.

There are also areas where mountain biking and off road cycling is possible.

Examples of cycling opportunities on the MOD Estate:

Salisbury Plain

When the Byelaws permit access, some areas of Salisbury Plain are available for cycling. These vary from hard wearing military roads ideal for recreational cycling, to more rugged and challenging byways and bridleways.

Kircudbright

A multi-user route has been developed at Kirkcudbright Training Area in South West Scotland allowing cyclists as well as horse-riders and walkers a fantastic opportunity to ride along an attractive linear access route, when red flags or lamps are not flying.

When cycling on the MOD Estate please be aware of military activity and be courteous.

  • Always avoid interrupting troops in training and cycle with respect for others, whether cyclists, pedestrians, people in wheelchairs, horse riders or drivers
  • Please acknowledge those who give way to you

Cycling Code of Practice

When cycling in areas where military training is taking place please be aware that you may come across troops at any point, and adhere to any signs or advice given.

  • Be prepared to slow down or stop if necessary – remember drivers of military vehicles may have restricted vision
  • When cycling on shared use paths such as bridleways please give way to pedestrians and horse riders leaving them plenty of room
  • Don't expect to cycle at high speeds
  • Be careful at junctions, bends and entrances
  • Exercise care when passing horses or other animals – do not sound your bell
  • Be self sufficient – in remote areas carry food, a repair kit, map and waterproofs
  • Cycle hi-visibility clothing helps you to be seen, and helmets can provide additional protection in the event of an accident
