LFA 9 is located primarily in Shropshire, but also extends into Powys, Clwyd and Staffordshire, and is a Dedicated User Area for helicopters of the Defence Helicopter Flying School based at RAF Shawbury. Most of the activity in this area is helicopter flying training using Squirrel and Griffin helicopters. RAF Shawbury is also home to the Central Air Traffic School that trains air traffic controllers and flight operations specialists. Also within this area are DCAE Cosford and RAF Ternhill, that are used as Relief Landing Grounds by helicopters from RAF Shawbury. The Army Training Area at Nescliffe is also used to provide advanced helicopter training.
LFA 9 has a total usable area of 3,525 sq km (1,361 sq mls) that is 1.8% of the total area in the UK available for low flying.
