LFA 2 is located in southwest England and includes Devon, Dorset, Somerset, eastern Cornwall, southwest Gloucestershire and northwest Wiltshire. Major flying stations within it are RNAS Yeovilton and RAF Lyneham. Other service establishments within LFA 2 include RAF St Mawgan,RAF Fairford, the Royal Naval Dockyard at Devonport, the Royal Marines Barracks at Chivenor and Lympstone, and the Army training area on Dartmoor.
Helicopters have a comparatively short range and this tends to restrict aircrew low flying training on RN Lynx and Sea King helicopters based at RNAS Yeovilton to areas close to the airfield. Additionally, Yeovilton based aircraft need to transit out and back overland to train over the sea. A significant number of RAF and Army Air Corps (AAC) helicopters train over Dartmoor, and Sea King helicopters routinely support RM training at Lympstone and Chivenor. Hercules transport aircraft from RAF Lyneham are a major usedr of LFA 2 because a number of drop zones are maintained on Exmoor, Dartmoor and in the area surrounding RAF Lyneham itself.
Usable area: 15,783 km2 (6,094 sq mls). This represents 8.8% of the total usable area of the UK Low Flying System.
