Biography

Sir Stephen was appointed in 2009 as Chief of the Air Staff, the professional head of the Royal Air Force.

He joined the RAF in 1976 and his career includes:

  • appointment as Director of Air Operations in MOD in 2002
  • promotion to Air Vice-Marshal, taking over the post of Capability Manager for Information Superiority
  • appointment as Controller Aircraft - with a place on the Air Force Board - in 2004
  • appointment as Director General Typhoon for the MOD in 2006
  • appointment as Deputy Commander in Chief Personnel and Air Member for Personnel, with promotion to Air Chief Marshal and Chief of the Air Staff in 2009
  • awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath in the 2012 Queen’s Birthday Honours List
