DSMC International Training

International Training

Overseas training, involving our NATO and EU partners is also on the agenda at the School and we have been involved in training in Iraq, Afghanistan, Oman, Kenya, Lithuania, Serbia, Malta and Italy. The School has recently trained the command group of a EU Battlegroup, as well as senior NATO ISAF personnel. Training school staff routinely deploy overseas to deliver media and communications training worldwide to help us maintain a global reach.

The school is always involved in development work in order to maintain its continuous evolution; courses are constantly under review and we are always looking to ensure we are using the most up to date training methods. International personnel who wish to attend a DMOC course should contact the International Defence Training department of the Ministry of Defence who can discuss their requirement.

Industry Partners

Industry Partners who would like to attend a DMOC course can also speak to International Defence Training. While priority is always given to military personnel deploying on operations, where spare capacity is available DMOC may be able to accommodate.

DSMC Combat Camera Team (CCT) Training

Combat Camera Team Leader Course

The Combat Camera Team Leader Course runs for up to 5 days and provides the senior NCO or Officer with the individual skills required to undertake OC Combat Camera Team duties. The runs prior to the Combat Camera Course which is conducted with the two military photographers allocated to the deploying team. Due to the fact that nominated OC CCTs can have a wide range of skills and experience, the course is tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual undergoing training.

The course comprises of four main elements: Photographic appreciation; Awareness & application of New Media; Appreciation of journalistic techniques; and an In-depth understanding of the news gathering process.

The selected candidate should have completed both the Defence Communicators' Course and Environmental Training (Afghanistan) (if deploying on HERRICK) prior to attending the course.

Combat Camera Team Course

The CCT Course lasts for 4 days and allows the deploying Combat Camera Team the opportunity to operate as a team and employing their skills and knowledge in a variety of collective training exercises.

DSMC Pre-Interview Training

DMOC provides Pre-Interview Training primarily for senior military officers and Defence Government Ministers who require a tailored training package to prepare them for a specific high profile media interview. This training is highly targeted and researched.

DSMC Media Skills Course (MSC)

The Media Skills Course gives individuals who are likely to engage with the media with the skills necessary to convince the media and the public of the reasoning behind military policy and operational decisions.  Typical students include policy formers, senior spokespersons, ship/squadron/unit COs, PR staff, JFHQ staff, and IPT Leaders. A bespoke package is also available for individuals who may require training in relation to their specific role. The course is a 1-day package beginning with media awareness, media handling, and interview techniques theory followed by practical TV interview sessions.

DSMC Senior Officers' Acquaint Course (SOAC)

The Senior Officers' Acquaint Course (SOAC) provides senior officers (OF5 and above), who manage staff in the Media and Communications environment, with an awareness of the principles of Media and Communications and their practical application within the contemporary media environment. It is a 1 day course and dates are flexible to meet demand. Enquiries regarding the SOAC should be directed to DSMC Admin Support.

DSMC Environment Training (Afghanistan) (ET(A))

Environment Training (Afghanistan) provides HERRICK pre-deployment training for personnel deploying to selected HERRICK Media and Communications posts. It is a 4-day residential course based at RAF Halton for personnel who have completed the Defence Communicators' Course. The course dates are flexible in order to align with a deploying brigade's work-up schedule and the requirements of non-brigade Media and Communication personnel. DSMC will deliver 2-3 packages per year depending on demand and dates will be agreed after consultation with the respective brigade media staffs, Front Line Commands and PJHQ. The intent is that those deploying together will train together.

Requests to attend Environment Training (Afghanistan) will be coordinated by the brigade media ops cells, Front Line Commands and PJHQ who will coordinate with the DSMC in order to programme training.

DSMC Defence Communicators' Course

The Defence Communicators' Course is the core course for all Defence personnel entering the specialist M&C environment and caters for personnel whose primary role or secondary duty is media related. It is an 8 day residential course held at RAF Halton. Course dates for 2011/12 can be found in the Media Operations Training DIN (see below). The Defence Communicators' Course is aligned to the Media and Communication Competence Framework and delivers the following principle learning outcomes:

  • Apply the underlying principles of strategic communications to all media and communications (M&C) activities
  • Conduct media and communications activities in accordance with the Defence communication strategy, policy and organisational responsibilities
  • Identify target audiences to better inform planning, message construction, channel selection and evaluation activities.
  • Use communication channels to deliver tailored messages to target audiences that are aligned to the communications strategy and plan
  • Conduct basic media and communications planning in order to manage and co-ordinate the delivery of coherent and effective messaging to target audiences
  • Construct messages for delivery to target audiences using specified channels that are in accordance with the media and communications strategy and plan
  • Evaluate all media and communication activities in order to improve future effectiveness

All students will undergo formal assessment during the course and successful completion of the DCC will result in the award of M&C competences on JPA.  Further details of assessment will be provided in joining instructions and during the initial phases of the course.  Requests for training should be submitted in accordance with the DIN and using the application form opposite.

DMOC - DSMC Support to Operations

The Defence Media Operations Centre (DMOC) - Defence School of Media & Communications (DSMC) assist all those deploying on operations with a series of training events which are designed towards developing individuals with Media Ops skills to a level that enables them to operate as part of a formed media cell.

The DSMC will also deliver bespoke media skills training for soldiers and officers who are about to deploy on Operations, who are likely to be hosting media visits or who will be required to give interviews to the media.

Media Skills Training: Individual training for personnel who can expect to find themselves facing the media in the course of their work - formation commanders, military award winners, military sporting personalities - Media Skills Course (MSC), Pre-Interview Training (PIT)

DSMC - Through Life Training

The Defence School of Media & Communications (DSMC) works closely with the Defence Academy and the Royal College of Defence Studies to offer structured career development training, as part of the Through Life Training initiative, to military personnel throughout their careers. DSMC deliver media and communication training as part of wider military career development training at the following levels

Individual Command and Staff College (ICSC): Delivering a 1 ½ hour media awareness presentation at SO2 level to the Maritime, Land and Air ICSC courses.

Advanced Command and Staff College (ACSC): As well as delivering individual media awareness and media skills training at SO1 level, staff from DSMC also coordinate media play during the end of course theatre war game.

Higher Command and Staff College (HCSC): As well as delivering individual media awareness and media skills training to OF5 level and above, staff from DSMC also coordinate media play during the end of course theatre war game.

Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS): As well as delivering individual media awareness and media skills training at OF5 level and above, staff from DSMC also coordinate media play during the end of course theatre war game.
