Ministry of Defence Civil Servants voluntarily work alongside the military in operational theatres usually for six months. Deployed Civil Servants work in direct support of the Armed Forces, undertaking a range of roles including Policy Adviser, Commercial Officer, Scientific Adviser and Civil Secretary (finance and governance).
At the end of 2009 the MOD conducted a research project to understand the wellbeing and experiences of MOD Civil Servants deployed to military operational theatres. This was the first research of its kind in the MOD. Questionnaires were sent to 249 civil servant ex-deployees and 5,211 non-deployees from across the MOD – they acted as an important control group.
