In July, Minister for Defence Equipment Support and Technology MIN (DEST), Peter Luff announced to Parliament that a report by the Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator (DNSR) into Lessons from the Fukushima Accident in Japan in March 2011 has been produced.
In his statement MIN (DEST) Peter Luff said:
“After the accident at the Japanese nuclear power station at Fukushima on 11 March 2011, Her Majesty’s Government asked the Chief Inspector of the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) to consider the lessons to be learned by the UK nuclear programmes; he has subsequently published various reports including most recently a report which includes responses from defence contractors which are nuclear licensees. For the Defence Nuclear Programme (DNP), in addition to work led by ONR, the DNSR has led activity employing a similar process to ONR including the use of Stress Tests based on those proposed by the European Nuclear Safety Regulatory Group.
“I am pleased to be able to confirm that DNP duty-holders, having conducted the work requested by the regulators, have concluded that it is safe to continue their current operations; both DNSR and ONR concur with this view. This re-affirms DNSR’s initial appraisal for the DNP made in July 2011. Notwithstanding this conclusion, further work will be conducted as part of normal business; one element of this will be to review severe accident arrangements.”
The DNSR has led the work across the DNP which complements that done by the ONR in respect of contractor-managed elements of the DNP.
