Post Aircraft Accident Alerting and Post Crash Management Initiation

Procedures for MoD Aircraft Accident Alerting and Post Crash Management Initiation apply to all aircraft on the UK military register including aircraft of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF), the RN and Army Historic Flights, as well as several other categories as detailed in Section 100 of JSP 551 Vol 2.

The principal elements of the procedure are as follows:

  • The Defence Crisis Management Centre (DCMC) Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff Duty Officer (DCDSDO) becomes the recipient of initial aircraft accident reporting during working and non-working hours, i.e. 24/7 duty. The contact telephone number is: 9621-88938 or 0207 218 8938.
  • The DCDSDO will initiate MOD's immediate response to an aircraft accident, alerting key units and officials by telephone. Units and officials that have non-immediate actions will be informed by e-mail. JSP 551 Vol2 is now the authoritative source document for Post crash Management Procedures.

Defence Air Safety Occurrence Report Form & ASIMS User Manual

The Defence Air Safety Occurrence Report should be used to report an Air Safety related 'event'. The Airprox Report, Birdstrike Report, Air Traffic Management Report, MALDROP Report and the Parachuting Report are complementary forms for reporting specific flight safety events.

The Air Safety Information Management System, ASIMS, is the database of all air safety occurrences.  The ASIMS User Manual provides guidance to all those personnel who are a link in the 'air safety chain'. The User Manual also contains guidance on completing a D-ASOR.

Display Flying Handbook

Display flying is perhaps the most testing role for any pilot or crew. No one will embark upon a season of displays unless they have already demonstrated high standards of character and flying skill. But success demands more than these qualities, as many people have learnt to their cost. A fair amount of mystique has also built up over the years about display flying and many who are new to the art are reluctant to ask questions.

This guide aims to unveil the mystique and answer at least some of the questions.
